Jinda Home of Safety
Since inception Bakker Productions has been a proud sponsor of Jinda Home of Safety. This NGO charity was founded by Renee’s parent’s, Wilma & Peter Bakker, after immigrating to South Africa in the early 80’s. Leaving behind a life in Holland they came to live on a small rural farm situated in the north-eastern province in Mpumalanga. Renee grew up in a family where having foster siblings at home was a common occurrence. When the HIV/AIDS epidemic vastly impacted the lives of many South Africans, Wilma soon came to realise a dire need existed within the community to have a place where otherwise disadvantaged children could be afforded a chance at life, education and happiness, and so Jinda home of Safety began.
Jinda’s primary function is the care and placement of orphans into a stable and loving family environment. The charity consists of a childcare centre, a community village consisting of six houses, a pre-school, and soup kitchen. Jinda currently cares for 18 children, ranging from one to sixteen years, and is run by foster carers who are carefully selected and screened by Jinda’s full-time social worker. Every child at Jinda is enrolled in a scholarship program which allows them to go to good local primary and secondary schools.
Sadly Wilma passed away in 2018 after battling cancer. It was Wilma’s dream to improve the lives of these children and so it is more important than ever for us to keep this dream alive. Thanks to Lynda Bakker, Peter Bakker snr, and Chemicorp, Jinda continues to thrive.
Attendance at Bakker Productions workshop performances are free, however, it is encouraged to donate a gold coin to Jinda. To date we have raised $873, which has sponsored school uniforms, school stationery, clothes, soccer boots and literacy planet memberships. Wilma often said ‘It takes a village to raise a child’, and here at Bakker Productions we feel honoured to be a small part of that village.
